Match Report:- PABC v Croesyceiliog -GBL – Sat 24th August 2024

On a dry but cloudy day, we welcomed Croesyceiliog to Fields Road for this important GBL fixture. The Mister men knew they had to win all remaining games to have any chance of overtaking Bedwas & Trethomas who had finished their fixtures on a total of 116 points, so 10 points was the minimum needed to have a chance of retaining the title. That was of course, a very tough ask against Croesyceiliog who always are a hard team to beat.

The game proved to be a very close encounter, with Pontymister leading by 2 shots on 5 ends, Croesy leading by 2 on 10 ends, Pontymister taking an 8 shot advantage on 15 ends, before Croesyceiliog pulled the scores level at the end 48 (7)-48 (5). This result meant that Bedwas & Trethomas were crowned GBL Div 1 champions & we congratulate them for this achievement which was well deserved.

On rink 2, the mister men rink of Alan Elliott, Jamie Roberts, Jason Bradshaw, and Captain Ian Collier never really got to grips with the rink and were well beaten by R. Lander, P. Barton, G. Peacock and T. Parfitt going down 6-22.

On rink 3, Pontymister’s Richard Beaugie, Andrew Wilmott, Richie Jones, and Keith Richards were involved in a very good game against L. Hawke, D. Lowry, P. Waters, and Peter Mitchell, the score was nip & tuck all the way up until the last few ends when the Ponty boys picked up a couple of counts to win 20-13.

On rink 4, the Pontymister foursome of Spanner Watkins, John Sheldon, Alan Taylor and no nonsense hard hitter Tom Guy gave a commanding performance against B. Taylor, C. Tapper, T. Whitcombe and I. Hendy running out 22-13 winners.

We thank Croesyceiliog for their company, & look forward to meeting them again next season.

Match Report:- Croesyceiliog v PABC – MBA – Saturday 24th August

On a slightly cloudy but dry day the Mister Men headed over to the eastern valley to do battle with Croesyceiliog in the MBA First Division. Croesy are a tough team to beat on their own patch and we knew we would have to play well to get a result there.

The green was heavy following the rainfall of the previous few days and Croesy certainly played the conditions much better than Pontymister.

On 5 ends there was only 2 shots in the game with Croesyceiliog taking an early lead, which they stretched to a commanding 20 shot margin on 10 ends, it was an 18 shot lead to the home team on 15 ends before Croesyceiliog ran out deserved winners by a 24 shot margin 86(12)-72(2).

On rink 2, the four of Mike Lyons, Phil Huntley, Chris Beale, and Roger Venn had a convincing win over W Saunders, P. Goring, P. Silverthorne, and Mike O’Dwyer running out 13-24 winners.

On rink 4, it was a very bad day at the office for Frank Trepleton, Graham Smith, Richie Murphy, and Dave Hill who never got to grips with their rink at all and lost 12-30 to D. Williams, H. Jenkins, N. Ford, and R. Jenkins.

On rink 5, the Mister Men’s rink of Sean Kenvyn, Nick Harris, Roger Simms, and Andrew Goodwin were involved in a close battle with A. Roberts, Mike Cleaver, N. Gooding, and M. Brooks. Pontymister led for most of the game, but dropped a “3” and “2”  on the last 2 ends to go down 18-22.

On rink 6, Pontymister’s Dave Bowd, Sid Phillips, Lloyd Turnbull, and shy, quiet skipper Ronnie Morgan were involved in a tight battle against Luke Jones, S. Manley, Kevin Jones, and C. Jones, eventually going down 18-21.

A very enjoyable hour was spent with our friends from Croesyceiliog after the game in which we enjoyed a very tasty buffet and some refreshing drinks.

We wish Croesyceiliog all the very best for their remaining games and look forward to doing battle again with them next season.

Match Report: – Machen v PABC SML Wednesday 21st August

Pontymister Athletic made the short journey over the valley to Machen on Wednesday evening, with a mix of experience and new players on show. It was a good opportunity for our fringe players to stake a claim for a first team spot  Machen, however,  were eager to demonstrate how they have improved this season and ran out victors by 67-54 – 12 points to 2.

The end of season is fast approaching and  the game finished in poor light with our only points coming from the rink of Jack Collier. Our other rinks were competitive, but on the night Machen deserved their win.

We would like to thank Machen for their hospitality and wish them well for the rest of the campaign.

Match Report: – Bedwas & Trethomas v PABC MBA Saturday 17th August

Needing points to ensure their safety in the MBA 1st division, Pontymister Athletic travelled to Bedwas & Treethomas on Saturday to face a team, who have been  flying in recent weeks. B&T are a team full of talent and camaraderie and on their home patch, they are a match for anyone. The early exchanges were close enough, with the visitors ahead the only success of the day came on Rink 3, with Shaun Kenvynon two rinks, but down overall by 13 shots. At halfway, the home team were demonstrating their superiority on the day and extended their lead by 27 shots. Things went from bad to worse for Ponty, with only the rink skipped by  Adrew Goodwin resisting  what was an onslaught from the home team who finished with their tails up. Final score B&T 104(12 points – Ponty A  61(2 points).

Rink 1 – on the swinging rink, the Ponty boys were totally outplayed by the home team, finding it difficult to register a winning end and went down by 23 shots.

Rink 3 was the only rink to win for Ponty came from Shaun Kenvyn, Ken McKinnon,Frank Trepleton and Andrew Goodwyn, the boys fought hard and were successful in a close encounter winning by  9 shots.

Rink 4 saw Chris Simmons, Graham Smith,Richie Murphy and returning skip Roger Simms were taking a battering, down by 15 shots at one stage, before they showed some character and came back to within  5 before losing the final end.

Rink 6 was entertaining to say the least, Elwyn Simmons, Sid Phillips, Lloyd Turnbull and the Rocket started like a train racing into a 8 point lead. However the home team found their feet and silenced the big man with some big scores.

Bedwas & Treethomas fully deserved their win on the day and you can see why they are so successful on their home patch and sitting at the top of the division; perhaps the county selectors should  pay a visit. Ponty just weren’t good enough on the day  and although certain individuals played well as a team we were way below par. Its always a great experience to come to B&T and as is usual they play the game as it should be played with pride, passion and respect. It was lovely to reminisce with so many friends after the game and we thank them for their hospitality. Finally we would like to wish themr, all the very best for the rest of the season and hope to see them next year.
